Smoother, more evenly-toned skin can be accomplished through stimulation of healthy tissue growth. The body will respond to the discarding of damaged skin cells by accelerating the production of new ones. Chemical peels, especially the medical-grade chemical peels performed by us, are an effective way to shed the older, damaged epidermis and replace it with a smoother upper layer. This not only helps get rid of small wrinkles and smile lines but also diminishes the visual appearance of certain discolorations such as age spots, freckles, and acne scars. There are several different types of peel treatments, each one of which is targeted to correct one or more specific problems.
What Chemical Peels Treat
The most common reason people undergo chemical peels is to smooth the skin and eliminate fine lines and wrinkles. Peel treatments can stimulate the body to replace darkened cells such as freckles, liver spots, injury scars and even mild rosacea. Depending on your needs, your treatment may involve the use of a strong acid that penetrates more deeply into and through the skin layers for most effective results.
Consulting with Us
We won’t perform a peel without first consulting with the client to discuss all treatment options. In most cases, a milder peel treatment using an acid-based solution is all that is needed to stimulate healthy epidermal growth. We want to look at the facial features closely to determine which type of treatment will likely produce the desired result.
If we and the client agree on a specific peel treatment, we will outline the procedure, set an appointment date, and give the client special instructions on how to prepare. Basically, we advise the client to avoid direct sunlight for at least a week prior to treatment and to stop applying heavy makeup for several days before the procedure is performed.
Types of Chemical Peels
Recent advancements in acid-based peel chemical compositions has made it very easy for us to choose a specific peel solution to correct specific problems. A mild or superficial peel treatment is performed by brushing on a solution containing glycolic or a similar type of acid, letting it sit for a few minutes, and washing it off with a solvent. The acid burns the epidermal layer, and after a few days the epidermis dries up and flakes off. There is no downtime for the client, and the newer, healthier skin growth becomes noticeable in a few weeks.
A deeper peel treatment targets discolorations and more severe wrinkling. A stronger acid is used and is allowed to sit on the skin for a longer period of time. During your consultation, we can help you learn about the different types of peels and help you decide on the best one for your needs.
