Prominent superficial veins, like varicose veins and spider veins, can cause symptoms like aching, swelling, burning sensations, and night cramps because they impede circulation, and may cause some patients to feel insecure and embarrassed about their appearance. At Med and Spa, we offer sclerotherapy treatments for patients interested in reducing the appearance of small, superficial veins like spider veins and varicose veins. This minimally-invasive procedure can reduce or eliminate the appearance of small superficial veins and provide relief from the symptoms caused by varicose veins.

What is sclerotherapy?
This medical procedure is used to treat the symptoms and improve the appearance of varicose veins and spider veins. A sclerotherapy procedure is performed by using a fine needle to inject a medicated solution, usually saline, into the designated veins. The medicated solution irritates the lining of the vein, which causes the vein to swell and eventually collapse. With time the collapsed vein turns into scar tissue and fades from view. Sclerotherapy is most commonly used to treat spider veins and varicose veins in the legs, but it can also be used to improve the appearance of small, visible veins in other parts of the body.
Benefits of Sclerotherapy
- Quick treatment sessions
- Minimal downtime
- Treats symptoms associated with varicose veins
- Reduces the appearance of small, superficial veins
How long does the procedure take?
Most sclerotherapy treatments take about 30 minutes to complete. The length of the procedure can vary from patient to patient depending on how many veins are being treated at a time.
What is the recovery period?
Most patients are able to resume their normal activities within 24 to 48 hours of a sclerotherapy procedure. Regular movement and walking is an important part of the recovery period as it helps prevent blood clots from forming in the treated area. We recommend patients wear compression stockings or bandages for at least two weeks following treatment. Patients should avoid strenuous activities or exercise for at least two weeks after a sclerotherapy procedure to ensure the treated area heals properly.
Are there any side effects?
Common side effects can include some bruising, stinging, or discomfort at the injection site immediately after the procedure. Many patients also experience mild swelling in the feet or ankles or muscle cramps following a sclerotherapy procedure. These side effects are temporary and generally subside within a couple weeks of the procedure.
