The skin is one of the first places where visual signs of aging appear. The skin can become brittle and dry, show fine lines and wrinkles and turn different shades on certain parts of the face and elsewhere. Pores are affected as well, and hair follicles can become damaged. Recently, an alternative form of skin rejuvenation known as platelet-rich plasma therapy has gained worldwide attention, and for good reason. PRP therapy for face and scalp treatment can help your skin look better than it has in years.
Platelet-rich plasma, abbreviated as PRP, uses the patient’s own blood to stimulate healing and growth. This is a minimally invasive procedure that can actually create healthier skin tissue, especially on the scalp. We highly recommend this procedure for those who are experiencing problems with facial skin and thinning hair on the scalp.
The Science Behind PRP Therapy for Face and Scalp
Blood contains plasma, which is mostly water with suspended nutrients. Blood also contains red cells that carry oxygen from the lungs to all parts of the body, white cells that help to fight off infections and platelets, which aid in clotting.
Platelets also contain special growth factors including proteins. These proteins aid in the healing of wounds. The blood clot helps keep out contaminated air, and the growth factors are used to help the body create new tissue to heal a wound such as a cut or scrape.
When injected beneath the skin, concentrated platelets in the plasma can kickstart a skin rejuvenating process. The result is healthier skin. When applied to the scalp, PRP can heal damaged hair follicles.
How PRP Therapy for Face and Scalp is Performed
We will first consult with the client and listen to concerns about skin problems or thinning hair. If we decide that PRP is the best course of action, we will set an appointment date.
During the treatment, we draw a small amount of blood from the patient’s arm and spin it in a centrifuge. This separates the plasma and platelets from the red cells. The resulting plasma mix is made into a thin gel and injected just beneath the skin.
Over the next few weeks, visual improvement becomes noticeable. If the PRP is rubbed onto or injected beneath the skin of the scalp, the growth stimulation works to heal or replace damaged cells and subdermal tissues. This includes hair follicles that are no longer producing thick strands of hair cells.
Some clients may be advised to combine PRP with micro-needling. Depending on the thickness of the skin and the depth of any discolorations, micro-needling may help stimulate new tissue growth when combined with PRP injections. Only after a consultation and examination of the facial skin or scalp can we advise the client about treatment options.
